Amsterdam Court of Appeal satisfied the request of Ukraine for judge recusal in the case of “Scythian Gold”

On October 28, the Amsterdam Court of Appeal ruled to dismiss the judge in the case of the ownership of the “Scythian gold”. The court granted Ukraine’s petition for judge recusal because of possible connection of Judge Oranje with lawyers of Crimean museums, which may indicate his bias in the consideration of the case.

Due to the coronavirus, the court hearing was not held. The court announced its decision in writing, without a public hearing. But the preliminary hearing, which took place on September 2, 2020, was quite interesting. Right during the speech of the judge, whose recusal was requested by the Ukrainian side, hearings were interrupted because one of the three judges considering the recuasl suddenly felt ill.
